The international ski and snowboard association FIS visiting the «Gran Becca»: Zermatt and Cervinia are ready
Exactly 80 days until the «Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening»! The preparations for the men's World Cup downhill on 11./12. November and the ladies World Cup downhill on 18./19. November are in full swing. On Thursday, August 24th, a joint inspection by representatives of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and those responsible for the "Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening" took place. The FIS gives the local organizers a good report. Zermatt and Cervinia are ready.
In addition to the FIS and the local organizing committee, representatives of the two national ski associations Swiss-Ski and FISI and the host broadcaster SRG also took part in the FIS inspection on August 24th. They were all able to see for themselves that Zermatt and Cervinia for the two men's downhill runs on 11./12. November 2023 and the two women's downhill runs from 18./19. November 2023 are ready.
The two FIS race directors Markus Waldner for the men and Peter Gerdol for the women confirm this positive impression: «The local organization committee is on course with the preparatory work. Compared to the races planned last autumn, essential optimizations have been made both on the Gran Becca and in the organizational area. We are optimistic that the first World Cup races will be held on the Matterhorn in November».
Franz Julen, President of the local organizing committee: «Due to the two-country constellation, we are organizing an event that cannot be compared to any other Ski World Cup race in terms of its organizational complexity. The positive feedback from the FIS shows us that we are on the right track. We will be ready in November to welcome the World Cup convoy in Zermatt and Cervinia».
Best summer training conditions
The athletes of the Ski World Cup elite have found the best training conditions in the Zermatt summer ski area over the past few weeks. In contrast to the previous year, the summer ski area could be operated continuously throughout the summer. In addition, the freshly inaugurated new 3S cable car «Matterhorn Glacier Ride II» from Testa Grigia up to the Klein Matterhorn has been providing considerable added value in the area since July 1, 2023.
Limited number of tickets and Sunrise Fan Zone
Tickets for the individual race days at the "Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening" are available at www.speedopening.com. A good two-thirds of the downhill run can be seen from the finish grandstands and from the «Cime Bianche Corner» in the finish area in «Laghi Cime Bianche», which is not the case at any other World Cup race. Tickets are only available in advance. There will be no ticket sales on site. Due to the limited spectator capacity in the finish area, the "Sunrise Fan Zone" with video wall, race commentary and catering facilities will be set up on Testa Grigia near the national border.
