Successful FIS inspection: «The Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening» is on the home stretch

On Monday and Tuesday, 19/20 September 2022, the final inspection by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and those responsible for the «Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening» took place in Cervinia, Italy. The season opener for the speed athletes will be held for the first time on the «Gran Becca» at the end of October and beginning of November. The FIS experts agree: from an organizational perspective, nothing stands in the way of successfully staging the first cross-border World Cup races in history.

A delegation consisting of FIS representatives, partners, municipal officials, and the local organising committee met in Cervinia over the past two days for the final FIS inspection before the first staging of the «Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening». The adjustments since the last inspection were presented in a general meeting on Monday. On Tuesday, those present went to the «Gran Becca» slope to inspect the start and finish areas, the course, the TV compound and various locations in the village. FIS Race Director Markus Waldner is delighted with the implementation by those responsible: «A lot has happened since the last inspection in July 2022. Our suggestions for improvement have been implemented, and the works on and off the slope are going according to plan. For the first time in the history of the World Cup, the race course crosses two countries in the Italian-Swiss border area, and the constant view of the Matterhorn makes the event even more unique. Hoping the weather will be on our side, nothing else stands in the way of successful races.»

The course for the «Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening» is set

The snowfall last weekend made it possible to reopen the summer ski area above Zermatt. As Franz Julen, president of the local organising committee, an important step, points out: «The question of snow is with us every day. Fresh snow at this time of year is anything but unusual at this altitude. We've always had snow on the glacier at the end of October, and we remain confident that it will be the same this year.»

The «Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening» tickets are available for individual days at www.speedopening.com. A good two-thirds of the downhill course can be seen from the «Grandstand» and the «Public Zone» in the finish area in Laghi Cime Bianche, which is not the case at any other World Cup race. Tickets are only available in advance, and there will be no ticket sales on site.
