On the day on which the first cross-border World Cup race / the first of a total of four World Cup downhill runs should have taken place, Zermatt Tourism, in collaboration with the Zermatt Ski Club and the partners of the Speed Opening, organised a spontaneously staged guest race on the new World Cup piste "Gran Becca". Ski legends such as Pirmin Zurbriggen and former World Cup skiers such as Fränzi Aufdenblatten, Bruno Kernen, Didier Défago, Elia Zurbriggen, Jürg and Tobias Grünenfelder led a team of around 30 guests each as captains. A total of around 250 guests registered for this unique World Cup Guest Race.
Ski race in perfect conditions
As with an official World Cup race, a start number draw took place for the guest race on the eve of the race on the World Cup stage in Zermatt - so that everyone could really feel like a ski star. On race day, the conditions on the glacier were fantastic: Bright sunshine, no wind, a snowy panorama - and a World Cup piste in impeccable condition, which former World Cup skier Elia Zurbriggen mastered as the fastest and thus led his team to victory. Amélia Amacker from Eischoll was the fastest in the women's individual rankings. The announcement of the results and the handing over of the prizes took place in World Cup style, just like the drawing of the starting numbers the evening before: On a big stage and with a show worthy of the World Cup!
